studio news

24/05/2024 – It was all hustle and bustle at August House today.  Studios were swept, windows and surfaces wiped down, deliveries of wrapped canvasses and cardboard boxes carefully carried through the front doors and loaded into the lift.  Measuring tapes, nails, ladders and packets of prestik adorned the paint splattered floors.  The smell of windolene and freshly mopped floors filled the air along with sounds of intermittent hammering and expressions of excitement.

We all eagerly awaited the arrival of art lovers to The Contra Fair Joburg on Sunday 26th May.  Once again, it was an incredible event, with lots to discuss, plenty of new people to meet and new artwork to seen and sold.

Thank you to everyone to braved the aftermath of the Pikitup rubbish strike to attend this event.  And thank you very much to those people who supported and bought artwork directly from the artists’ studios.

18/11/2023 – Our group exhibition Choice Assorted was a great success, with many people popping in to come and have a look at our new work!

The 18 participating artists were : Alpheus Ngoepe, Blessing Blaai, Chantal Masinga, Dumisani Jere, Eve De Jong, Gugulethu Masuku, Jordan Swart, Lungisa Madywabe, Mbali Mdikane, Melokuhle Mdlopane, Mohini Pillay, Nsika Mhlongo, Ntokozo Mudau, Ogorogile Nong, Pule Magopa, Rejoice Kunene, Siyabonga Vilakazi, and myself, Lisa Younger.

01/09/2023 – I am so excited to be chosen, alongside 17 other artists, to participate in the Business of Being an Artist (BOBA) course, funded by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, and mentored by Les Cohn (from Art Source South Africa) and Sara Hallatt (from The Meta Foundation).  It has been an amazing course offering many insights and tools to navigate the many facets of the business side of our artistic careers.

As part of the course we have to each produce 4 new artworks, as well as plan and execute our own group exhibition (which we’ve called Choice Assorted), which will be the celebratory culmination of the course in November.

27/08/2023 – we had a great turn out for our group exhibition ‘Inside Life’, curated by Sara Hallatt.

30/05/2023 – thank you to everyone who visited Open Studios Johannesburg, and those who popped into my little studio to see my new artwork and have a chat.  Once again, it was an incredible event with lots of interesting visitors and great feedback.  And of course, a big thank you to those who bought!

01/01/2023 – I save up each year to be able to afford six months studio rental at End Street Studios, on the 2nd floor at August House.  It’s my first week in this little studio and I am looking forward to cutting out some new work.  I am not sure where I am going with this little yellow number, but it will reveal its lovely self pretty soon.
