“There before the grace of you go I.” Kathy’s Song, Eva Cassidy (original by Simon and Garfunkel)
There is energy in a garden that gives unconditionally. Using my spade, broom and secateurs, digging and mixing parts of myself into the soil, I can pour my heart out in the garden and yet still return to the house with my heart full.
These artworks are a growing collection of a cast of characters that grow tenaciously in a sloped and rocky garden right outside my studio. This steep site was previously a neglected dumping ground for all sorts of leftovers. Since 2017, I have slowly reclaimed and nurtured it into a thriving indigenous garden. The plants have been gifted from various gardens of friends across Johannesburg, and some I have collected by taking a sneaky cutting from a public park or rescued from the side of the road.
